Greg Bass, superintendent of Rocky View School Division, has been appointed deputy minister of education effective June 1. Cabinet made the appointment May 15.
Bass has served as superintendent of Rocky View School Division since 2007. Prior to assuming that position, he served as associate superintendent and superintendent of Buffalo Trail Public Schools Regional Division. He began his teaching career in 1988 in Northland School Division before joining Elk Island Public Schools Regional Division as a teacher and administrator. He has also served as a director of the College of Alberta School Superintendents and as a member of the Alberta Education Stakeholder Technology Advisory Committee.
He holds a BEd in secondary education and a MEd in policy studies, both from the University of Alberta. He is currently in his final year of a doctoral program in educational leadership at the University of Calgary, where he is completing a dissertation entitled “Transforming into a 21st-Century Learning Organization.”
According to the profile posted when the position of deputy minister was advertised, Bass “will play a critical leadership role for the ministry as it provides policy direction, funding and assurance to the education system so that all students are successful at learning” and “Guided by the Inspiring Education report, the Deputy Minister will lead the transformation of the education system.”
Bass succeeds Tim Wiles, who served as deputy minister of education from May 2012 until his departure earlier this year.
